What To Know About Web Accessibility Standards

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

The set of technical standards known as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) was created by the World Wide Web Consortium over 10 years ago. It has since been updated to WCAG 2.0.  WCAG standards are recognized internationally and have become the primary tool to evaluate and ensure accessibility for all web users.

Section 508

Section 508 is the law that defines requirements for digital content published by all entities receiving Federal funding. The requirements essentially mandate that all content published electronically must be accessible and usable for individuals with disabilities, regardless of whether they are employees or the general public.

A Vast Amount Of Existing Content

As a school, a government agency/office, or an institute of higher education, your existing website probably contains an archive of material that is not yet accessible.

Existing content poses a very real liability for your organization.

When an organization is proactive in addressing a problem of this nature, it tends to afford itself a greater level of leniency if a complaint arises. The organization that takes action voluntarily is openly acknowledging that there is an issue and is actively engaged in the process of mitigation.

AKEA Accessibility Partners will help you create a strategic path forward.
